A good friend recently shared with me his world vision and his outlook about prayer. What I expected was this grand plan from this famous doctor and speaker. But, what I received was a humble look at the entire picture of the world from the point of hunger and destitution to practical living and then to extravagance. All of this, he said, is a part of the human condition. None of it is beyond the scope of a prayer, deserving our attention.
Recently, I had the opportunity to sing the song “The Prayer,” which is a beautiful, David Foster song. As the words fell from my lips: “A world where pain and sorrow will be ended. And every heart that’s broken will be mended. We’ll remember, we are all God’s children, reaching out to touch You, reaching to the sky,” I never once thought of this prayer being for the rich or for people not hurting from devastation of any kind.
I remember prayers even from childhood at the dinner table that always talked about the hunger in China and the orphans around the world. But we never even considered praying for the peace and unity of our own family, or our middle-class neighborhood, or the wealthy who lived adjacent to my small town. Don’t they and we need prayer, too? I thought.
The truth is: when you come from nothing, you rarely expect anything grand in your life.
When you come from wealth, you may go your entire life feeling the world owes you something. People such as Ben Affleck who just won the People’s Choice award for philanthropy for his work in the Eastern Congo, probably have everything material in the world. Then he takes a trip to the Congo and notices how disenfranchised these people are. So, he decides to help—to begin to generate some interest to the world to aid the downtrodden. But, had he not been a person of means, he couldn’t have done anything for the people he saw on any large scale. So, what about praying for the movers and shakers, too, for direction so that they can generate the flow of their money to those who need it most?
As a result one friend’s outlook about prayer, my personal intention has changed about prayer treatment, in general. If we pray for our own prosperity, let us also consider lifting the veil of poverty for all those who have a problem believing they deserve wealth. If we pray, today, for wholeness for our bodies, let us also think about all of those in the world who simply feel that they deserve cancer or diabetes. If we reach out our hearts in prayer for mental anguish, let us also look at the big picture of unrest and anxiety in the entire world and pray for our world leaders and those who can make a difference in the world.
I believe when we do this, our prayers become complete. We come out of our own egos and into the mind of God. Now, we see a picture of all who need our help and can become a voice from an omniscient, albeit, philanthropic prayer warrior for any and all who need to be liberated from any kind of pain or desperation. And so be it!
