Reflections from #Infinity - #spirituality

Reflections from #Infinity - #spirituality

Most of our faith begins with believing in the vague, but intriguing, idea of infinitus—limitless or endless being. The possibility of substance having no end is like watching a computer come up with a myriad of programs and information from a tiny hard drive, then sending it in seconds to the other side of the world.  The first time I watched an airplane take flight I had a similar feeling. Most people have trouble wrapping their minds around infinity. My mother, who was born in the 1930s and who had to cook with coal in the stove and go to the bathroom outside, can barely fathom the capability of a computer or cell phone. But infinity seems to be a state she can understand more easily.

Imagining a place outside of the realm of time seems to be even a larger stretch for my 3-dimensional mind. Yet, if we believe what most scriptures say, a place exists outside of the reality of time, where spirit is changeless and peaceful.

I get glimpses of this place when I #meditate. When I find that place between sleep and awake, I want so strongly to stay floating forever. The feeling of divine meditation resembles one hand falling asleep while you are yet awake. You can’t feel your arm, but you can move it, perhaps with your other hand. The other hand would be likened to your observer mind or the subconscious. The observer seems to be able to draw the mind to a quiet, weightless bliss all at the same time. If this state can be available for every human in this life, then a metaphor exists for me about eternity.

What I’m saying is: to find your belief in an eternal existence starts with #meditation. If you never learn to counterbalance ego reality with spirituality, you will never find a spiritual path worth taking. Trust me, friends, I have been teaching this for a long time and know many spiritual practitioners. They vary in many ways, but one thing is for sure, all of them have had some kind of epiphany involving an out of body experience or vision.

When you have a miracle like Jesus walking through your wall and climbing into your heart, you absolutely never forget that moment. I get it that not everyone is going to have these out of body experiences or open visions, but I do believe that if a person opens his/her mind to infinitus then the likelihood of an experience exactly like I described above could happen.

I don’t limit God or spirit. I imagine, when I pray, that a myriad of information downloads into my finite mind. How God chooses to use the information can’t be left up to me. Most times, I have no idea what to do with half of what I see in spirit. Yet, when I act on my spiritual impulse, I am almost always correct.

Just yesterday I sent an email to a person who needed to hear the exact words I wrote. In fact, he told me that he imagined hearing these words from me, before I even said them. In my meditation, did I tear down the wall between the dimensions, rent the veil,  to be able to hear what was on his mind, or was I simply open to spirit helping him through me? This has no matter to me. If I make what God does through me my business, then I have already slipped into the ego without even knowing it.

New Challenge: Go to Week 5 of the “Year to CLEAR Challenge” at www.Bosebastian.com

Look for MY LATEST BOOK:  “Finding Authentic You, 7 Steps to Effective Change” with a Year to CLEAR (C-larity, L-ove, E-nthusiasm A-nd R-elationship-Ready) on my Website in the Webstore. Thanks!

Below is information that I will be sharing for about a month, as not every person on my list reads the blog every day. If you have already read it, just skip over it. Thanks for understanding.

A Year to CLEAR Challenge:
(Please Know: You Can Join Us At Any Point in the Year Challenge.)

The masses search outward for things that qualify them as a person, but I always go inward for that which quantifies me for greatness. At twenty-five I preached on street corners in NYC as an in-the-closet Pentecostal minister. One day I heard a still small voice say, ‘God cannot be contained in a book or a law or even in a religion. Dig deeper, reach further to find me, and you will find your authentic Self.’”

A Year to CLEAR Challenge!

The acronym CLEAR stands for (Compassionate, Loving, Enthusiastic, And Relationship-Ready). The goal of this project is to engulf readers in a weekly study that will transform them by removing blocks, promote self-growth, and give them wings to fly freely into daily life. Each week, by going to BoSebastian.com and choosing the Year to CLEAR Challenge tab, a new challenge or thought to provoke conversation, growth, and group functionality.

My vision is to make Finding Authentic You the book to have in your Kindle or on your computer. The book is a comprehensive look at growth—spiritually, mentally, and physically.

As a yoga teacher and student of the Ayurvedic tradition, I bring to the table understanding of physical challenges, the ability to overcome mental problems with Life & Health Coaching, as well as hypnotherapy, and expertise in meditation and spirituality as a minister.

The combination of all three in one book with an interactive connection to like-minded readers, for one year, is what makes this Year to CLEAR Challenge a must-do for every spiritual seeker.

The One-Year Approach to Change

No one believes he or she can change overnight. But success in change comes from the metaphors of nature. Seasonally, life changes all around us in nature. Finding Authentic You offers a gradual change perspective, looking at the triune aspects of change as in yoga: Body, Mind and Spirit.

Accessing the ability to change and finding yourself actually pursuing change must be a daily search, which I call getting to the “observer mind.”

In this frontal cortex of the brain we find the anatomy of change and the power to counter every negative trigger of the human process. The workings of Hypnosis, NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) are all positive actions to help the mind and body flow to a positive space for change.

Every aspect of FINDING AUTHENTIC YOU fulfills this constant need for diffusing the negative past and dreaming of a fulfilling future.

Step 1: Recognize That Change is Inevitable
Step 2: Release from Resistance to Change
Step 3: Understanding Change and Allow Spirit to Define It
Step 4: A History Lesson—About You
Step 5: Look at Your Past with Compassion
Step 6: Making a Strong Commitment to Change
Step 7: Dream Your Fabulous Future

Project Runway #projectrunway

Project Runway #projectrunway

I watched Project Runway for one season, because the show aired right before my scheduled time to play the piano and sing at a local piano bar. The gay crowd often would ask me to wait to play, because the program ran into my set. So, I ended up watching the program most of the time. The title of the show sounds as if it would be about models, but it’s actually about designers making fashionable clothes.

I once dated a man who designed clothes, and even knew a friend who got on the show, but still, it’s not the kind of program that truly interested me. I believe the reason lies in the idea that our deepest artistic expressions are judged by people who want our authenticity to fit into the Ego’s paradigm of art and fashion. I don’t believe most of us enjoy being judged.

Life often is about showing our best, though, and parading around until someone decides we have the goods for the job, the relationship, or even the friendship. This kind of ego-driven life can lead us to desire to exact what others want in our behavior, instead of acting upon our true, authentic desires.

Assessing our good and bad qualities and working to achieve our personal best is a good desire. If you had trouble expressing power in an interview, I would suggest, as a life coach, that you practice with a friend until you can overcome your fear and be able to shine, as children do. If your teeth were crooked and brown from years of smoking and you had trouble finding a date, who wouldn’t recommend fixing the problem the keeps people seeing your beauty?

I once had a very good-looking friend who practiced bodybuilding. He spent hours each day making every muscle ripple. He became quite the athletic specimen. However, when he opened his mouth, every tooth was crooked and brown, enough so that he appeared more like a bagman. I never understood why he didn’t see that the reason he couldn’t get a date with a pretty woman was because of his teeth, not his kind personality or great body.

Making a simple change like getting a goiter cut off your face isn’t a bad thing, if all people notice is your goiter. I had a scar cut off my eyeball, once, because every time I got a picture taken, my left eye took all the focus. I figured soon that this wasn’t something I wanted to live with, nor my two front teeth crossed. I got those fixed too. Neither operation affected my authentic self. In all actuality, I felt more comfortable with myself, if anything.

Last evening, I visited a new spiritual men’s group. When I arrived, to my surprise two women led the group. As always, I sat back and waited to see if this was the kind of group I would feel comfortable in participating. An old client led the group, which helped a great deal in becoming vulnerable.

My greatest spiritual goal these days has been to create room in my life for spirit to operate more powerfully. To do this, I feel as if I have to clear space to be led into a different, more authentic path. What I noticed about myself, as we were led through different spiritual exercises, was that I had become an amalgam of attributes others expected of me, instead of being my true spiritual self.

Case and point: when a new client comes into my office, the first thing I assess: Is this the kind of person that would be afraid of my true spiritual leading. If so, I act according to their needs instead of follow my highest calling for them. That is not to say that I don’t try to find ways to let each client know what I sense spiritually for them. I just have to use different language for each new person. Some are more Christian, some are atheists, some are Buddhists. With each person, I try to make him/her feel comfortable, which isn’t a bad attribute.

The problems is that my greatest gifts as a healing practitioner can only be utilized when a new client comes in with a spiritual acumen that would include no laws about what spirituality must and must not be. When that happens, I can use all my insight and intuitive spiritual nature to heal completely.

So, in this spiritual group I attended, as we went through the exercises, I realized that my entire body had become stuck, just like my mind with new clients. Moving freely in space became uncomfortable and uniform, instead of liquid, like living water. I noticed, then, that my greatest desire to receive from the group is to unhook from my old behavior and give my body and mind the opportunity to let my spirit flow more freely. We all need to have a safe place to be all of our authentic self. Often, work is not that place. So, finding a spiritual group that you attend frequently would give you the opportunity to expand and grow and the security to be open with a group you get to know and trust. I recommend it highly.

Feast on This! Wealth? #Thanksgiving

Feast on This! Wealth? #Thanksgiving

I find gratefulness in the smallest of things. The happiest times of my life were when the biggest harvest NYC had to offer was a grocery bag full of 10-cent Top Ramen and a tray of various chicken parts for soup. Friends accompanied me at almost every meal, thankful and wide-eyed like children on Christmas morning I welcomed every day with expectation of good.

Thanksgiving historically is not just for Americans, as this tradition actually began in the 1500s with the English. The early settlers in the America simply adopted a familiar tradition to give thanks for the harvest, their new land, and all the good in their lives. But people in many different lands also celebrate Thanksgiving, mostly for the same reason as American’s have embraced.

When we sit down to our Thanksgiving dinners, rife with lush and caloric food, do we feast on our over indulgence? Eating too many helpings of apple and pumpkin pie after 3 plates of turkey, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, and baked rolls makes my stomach hurt just thinking about it; although, I have definitely been there. When you grow up without ever getting a second helping—except on holidays—one tends to overeat and doesn’t complain—outloud.

The Christian bible says, “It is the Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom” everyday. This promise becomes something to be thankful for, yet most us can’t even fathom the idea of what the kingdom means. Is it inside us (Luke 17:20), as the bible also says? Is it prosperity, truth, love, intimate relationships, the perfect job, or plenty of land? If you were to give thanks this week on #Thanksgiving, exactly what would you be grateful for in your life? And, most importantly, does your gratefulness embrace the belief that God has given you your portion of abundant life?

One tradition I learned from the American Indians is to go around the table and allow each person to express one thankful moment. With this idea, everyone gets to take part of the unified prayer of thanks at the table. You will hear everything from being grateful for beautiful flowers, the smell of jasmine on a summer day, pets, to my beautiful spouse. Rarely will you hear people speak of being thankful for big money and fancy cars, as wealth isn’t the barebones of life. Expensive items become the bobbles in life, not the mainframe or foundation.

This, opposed to an Italian proverb that says, “If you scatter thorns, don’t go barefoot!” Being thankful for the bad in our lives just doesn’t seem to fit the tradition. However, if we look closely, we may thank otherwise.

Absolutely and positively, every horrible event in my life had turned out to be some of the most blessed and cherished moment of growth. So, how do I make room in my prayer on this Thanksgiving Day for things like the recent hurricane or a bombing of an American icon?

Again, I go back to American and Christian traditions of the first settlers. In the book of Romans 8:28 the Christian bible says: “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” If we are to be thankful for the rich life God has given us on this day of bounty and harvest, let’s glean the wheat from the chaff as well.

“From the spoils of my terrible childhood, I became a strong man able to help others through difficult times.” “From the bombing of 9-11, I became a more compassionate person.” “From going bankrupt, a understood about building a business on firm foundation.” “From the diagnosis of my cancer, I found a new relationship with my spouse.”

On this week of Thanksgiving, let us all dig a little deeper and be thankful for the amazing lives we now have as a result of so many tragic and wonderful days as humans. Let us also rejoice in the smallest joys, such as our pet greeting us at the door, a consistent paycheck, health, and even the wisdom to compassionately observe this awesome state of humanness.

Psychology vs. Religion: Where the Two Shant Meet

Psychology vs. Religion: Where the Two Shant Meet
Yesterday, while waiting for Allen to finish his workout (he ran about 20 minutes longer than I—because he can), I sat in the lobby of the YMCA and read the local Christian magazine. As I leafed through the pages, I noticed two articles about psychology that intrigued me. I guess I wondered more if the articles would diverge from the science of psychology to fit the belief of the Christian Psychologist.
Over the years of my life, I have watched as proclaimed therapists and psychologist have eschewed the science of psychology to try to warp people’s minds by trying to “convert” them from homosexuality, transsexuality, and different ways of thinking that don’t converge with the bias of their belief. These articles I’d read were no different. I feel as if the articles would have gone down a scientific path based on actual studies and informed research, had the authors not had to pander to the religious bias of the magazine.
This bothers me as much as a political or religious figure pretending to be anti-gay, when some of his or her best friends just happen to be gay. Some even have family members battling it out, as we’ve seen recently the former Vice President’s daughters feuding bipartisan imbalance where gay meets religion. Seriously? How many states and federal agencies have to proclaim we have rights before the religious right stops its defiance over gay people’s first amendment rights?
Personally, I’m tired of people pretending to be gay-friendly, when they vote for political leaders who stymie the opportunity for the entire United States to be fair and equal concerning GLBT rights. Many gay people pay a lot of taxes, just as much, probably, as some of the very wealthiest in the U.S. We deserve to be treated like first-class citizens.
Psychology is by definition the “scientific” study of the mind and its functions. It’s not the religion of the mind and it’s functions. So, can psychology and religion merge when bias exists? From what I’ve seen in Christian counseling, I don’t believe it can. Now, I have to say that plenty of religions have overcome the bias and are working to merge these new beliefs with the counseling that goes on in their churches. But religions such as Pentecostal, which is where I have my roots, Catholicism, Baptists, and Church of Christ, Hinduism, and many other strong rule-based religions still will seek to find their own form of counsel instead of bending toward the scientific.
In my religion (either Unity or Centers of Spiritual Living) is where psychology and religion actually meet, which is a quieting relief. No bias exists about any culture or sexuality, so love and peace is taught instead of intolerance. How can you NOT buy into a religion that is about spreading love instead of prejudice and hate?
It’s time for people who have family and friends who walk the path of intolerance, stand up for yourself and extricate these people from your lives. You only allow them their because you don’t have the faith in your own truth. If you believed in yourself and in your power as a son or daughter of God, no matter what anyone says or does concerning that belief, you wouldn’t tolerate disharmony in your life. I make laws against it. If someone in my life even hints at being anti-gay in their voting or belief, I simply let them go from my intimate life. I’m not saying I’m unfriendly or exchange my tolerance for their intolerance. I’m merely sharing that I dismiss them from any intimacy in my life.
If we all did this (gay and gay friendly), we probably would have a clearer picture of right and left in the country. Perhaps, there would be a lot less people floundering in the middle, and way more on the left. Who knows, really, until people quit trying to balance in the middle.
